Geelong selected him with pick number 23 overall during the 2002 AFL Draft.   In 2006, Lonergan started suffering serious problems

with his kidney and was hospitalized which caused the removal of his kidney.  A day after being re-drafted by Geelong, he got into a car

accident on his way to training. It was in 2007 that he was able to recover and came back to play for Geelong’s VFL team.
